Ugallu is a character from the series Machikado Mazoku. She is the familiar and adopted daughter of Mikan Hinatsuki.
Originally a familiar imbued within Mikan during a failed summoning ritual, Ugallu fed off her mana and became a more complex being. Still focused on her job of protecting Mikan however, she would use magic to lash out on Mikan's surroundings anytime she was distressed, resulting in her curse. Yuko Yoshida and Momo Chiyoda dove into Mikan's heart in order to speak with Ugallu and convince her to stop. Upon learning that she was actually causing Mikan trouble, Ugallu began to vanish while lamenting her failure, but Mikan herself stopped her and convinced her to try again. The group decide to re-summon Ugallu properly, and with the help of their friends they succeed. Mikan tasks Ugallu with finding a new job of her own, and invites the girl into her family. She has lived with Mikan in Banda Terrace since.
Since she was created as a familiar Ugallu doesn't have a soul, her true form is a mist-like entity inhabiting a physical vessel. As a result she technically counts as inanimate, allowing her to freely enter dreams and even sealed spaces if sent as an offering.
Appearance[]

Ugallu in her battle form
Ugallu appears as a young girl, and has messy brown hair with black spots, long bangs, and a round ahoge. Her eyes are red, but her right eye is always covered by her bangs. Her hair actually reaches her mid-back in length, but is usually tied into a ponytail that resembles an animal-like tail. Her arms and legs are covered in brown fur up to her elbows and shins respectively, and she has paw-pads on her hands and feet.
She most often wears simple outfits comprised of various T-shirts and spats. Her battle form consists of a short brown sleeveless dress with a white top, a brown and black tuft collar, and an exposed back, all with a texture resembling fur. The fur on her limbs also grows further in this state, past her elbows on the arms and up to the thighs on her legs.
Personality[]
Ugallu is energetic and simple-minded much like a child, and at times she's almost animalistic in her behavior. As a familiar she is hardworking, loyal, and loves performing tasks. She especially enjoys receiving praise for her accomplishments. In turn though she hates to fail, and shows a strong drive to succeed even when it brings her harm. Ugallu is also notably very protective of Mikan and will go out of her way to guard her. She has shown to be surprisingly perceptive as well, and has a good memory. However she is also easily distracted, and has difficulty understanding complicated subjects, preferring a more straightforward approach to solving problems.
Ugallu can't read well, and also can't count above 10, as she is still learning words and numbers from Mikan. Mikan has made her learn all vocabulary related to citrus, however.
She has a great love of meat, but isn't very fond of citrus fruits despite Mikan's obsession with them.
Story[]
When Mikan was a child, her father attempted to summon a demon familiar to protect his daughter and family, however after botching the ritual with a low quality vessel and citrus-doused offering the demon ended up within Mikan instead. That demon was Ugallu. Though familiars usually don't possess wills of their own, Ugallu over time fed off Mikan's mana and imbued itself with her Magical Girl powers, becoming a more complex being. Even then, Ugallu was focused on her task of protecting Mikan, but as she couldn't see what was happening outside she chose to lash out at the surroundings anytime Mikan grew distressed, which is the cause of her curse.
Volume 4[]
After an incident with her curse during preparations for Sakuragaoka High School's sports festival, Mikan becomes depressed and plans to leave the town in secret. Yuko and Momo, resolved to help their friend, barge into her room and explain their intention to dive into her heart and speak with the demon inside her and convince it to stop. Mikan explains what she knows about the being called "Ugallu", and Lilith points out that it likely isn't the real monster of myth, but a familiar made in its image.
Within Mikan's heart Yuko and Momo find her unconscious surrounded by a dark miasma, Ugallu's true form without a vessel, which proceeded to lash out at them. In order to solidify the miasma, Yuko transforms her staff into a giant whisk with the properties of the legendary spear Amenonuhoko. Yuko's plan works, though it uses up most of her energy, and the mist takes the form of a beast-like girl. The girl, Ugallu, is initially confused, but Momo calms her with snacks. After several failed attempts at communicating, Momo finally asks Ugallu to leave Mikan, but she refuses as protecting her was the job she was made for. Momo asks Ugallu how she decides when Mikan needs protecting, to which Ugallu replies that she attacks anything that shakes Mikan's heart. Momo explains that Ugallu's actions were actually causing Mikan (and her) trouble the whole time, which shocks Ugallu. Realizing she had failed her job Ugallu agrees to leave, although without a purpose or vessel that means her existence would disappear. Hearing this, Yuko and Momo try to convince her otherwise, but Ugallu believes that Mikan could never forgive her. As she disappears, Ugallu says she wishes she could have thanked Mikan for giving her this life, but Mikan suddenly wakes up and grabs Ugallu telling her to stop feeling down and to try again. Ugallu asks why Mikan isn't mad at her for failing her job, so Mikan replies that she is mad but that's exactly why she wants Ugallu to keep living and make amends for her mistakes. She also cites her own experience of still being accepted by her friends after her own failures, so she wants Ugallu to have another chance as well. Ugallu agrees to stay, while Yuko, Momo, and Mikan decide to properly re-summon her into the real world.
Upon waking up the group reconvenes, now with Anri Sata who arrived while they were asleep, to discuss their plan. Ugallu had explained why the original ritual had failed: the magic circle was made wrong, the vessel was of poor quality, and her offerings had too little mana (and too much lemon). Anri jokes that due to the circumstances Mikan was like Ugallu's mother, and Yuko latches on to that idea much to Mikan's displeasure. The groups calls in Sion Ogura to help them prepare a plan for the ritual. Based on Sakura Chiyoda's notes, which Sion had been studying, she determine they need a high quality vessel, an accurate magic circle, and quality offerings infused with mana. Realizing they have access to everything they need, the group splits up to collect them. Yuko heads to Asura Cafe to ask Lico to prepare the offerings and also to collect fur from Shirosawa for the vessel. Meanwhile, Mikan and Anri called over their friends from school as well as Ryoko Yoshida to help Momo prepare the magic circle. With everything complete Yuko activates the magical circle with Momo's support, at last summoning Ugallu.
Ugallu successfully inhabits the vessel, and after asking what her new job is Mikan tells her that as she's become too complex to be considered a mere familiar, she should find one on her own. Though perplexed, Ugallu accepts and prepares to leave, but Mikan stops her and invites Ugallu to stay with her as a part of her family. Ugallu accepts her offer, and begins her new life in the town of Sakuragaoka. The next morning, Ugallu greets Yuko as "Boss" and though Yuko protests, Ugallu insists that since Mikan told her Yuko was her boss and that Yuko's role had been key to saving her, Ugallu accepts her as the town's boss.
Volume 5[]
Since moving into Banda Terrace, Ugallu began performing various chores such as cleaning, watering plants, and standing guard. She asks Yuko as her boss to appoint her to a new job within the town, so Yuko brings her to Asura Cafe. There, they learn that Lico's cooking is in a slump as a result of pouring too much mana into her food since the fritters she made for Ugallu's summoning, storing the uneaten dishes in the now glowing refrigerator. Yuko introduces Ugallu to Shirosawa, who offers to let help out in the cafe. However, she encounters various difficulties, such as being unable to read the menu, or accidentally slicing through the board and counter with her claws when cutting onions. Though Ugallu grows disheartened for causing trouble, Shirosawa reassures her that it isn't her fault, and he was the one who made the mistake of trying to put her to work without understanding her weaknesses. He tells Ugallu and Yuko that as she has only recently been born, they shouldn't be counting what she can't do, but instead help her find what she can do, and that experiencing failures will help to that end. Mikan chimes in that she doesn't just want to find a suitable job for Ugallu, but one that the girl herself wants to do. Ugallu replies that as a familiar, the jobs she's entrusted with are the jobs she wants to do, but Mikan retorts that she isn't just a familiar anymore and that she should find her own aspirations.
Ugallu states that she then wants to eat meat as she's low on energy from moving around so much, which Mikan says is more an appetite than an aspiration. They then hear a loud rattling noise coming from the cafe's kitchen, which Lico explains was an explosion inside the fridge. The refrigerator, cloaked in a dark energy, emerges controlled by the mana from the food inside. Ugallu says she understands how the food feels, having been born for an unfulfilled purpose and not understanding what to do, and decides she wants to help by eating them. Ugallu slices the refrigerator with her claws and devours the food and fridge alike, which settles the vortex of mana. She comes to realize that while she cannot read or use kitchen utensils, she can still cut and fight with her claws, and that she intends to find a job where she can put them to use. However, she next realizes that the battle with the fridge left the cafe extremely damaged. While Mikan and Yuko rush to apologize, Shirosawa calms them and reassures Ugallu that compared to her finding new principles to live by the damage to the cafe was a trivial problem, prompting Ugallu to thank him as "Boss's Boss".
Later, Ugallu accompanies Yuko, Momo, Mikan, Anri, and with her new body, Lilith, on a camping trip in the mountains near the town. Mikan has her cut the firewood into smaller pieces, though Ugallu then cowers behind her from the fire. Ugallu and the rest enjoy a barbecue with meat supplied by Anri, and she's the first to fall asleep on Mikan's lap. When Shamiko's soul is captured by Mizuchi that night, Ugallu and the others set off to find a way to save her. Shamiko calls to them through telepathy, though she's unable to control her output and speaks too loud which hit Ugallu's ears especially badly. The stunned Ugallu stays behind at the camp with Mikan and Anri. Once the situation is resolved, Ugallu is last seen sleeping next to the now awakened Yuko.
When Asura Cafe relocated to Banda Terrace after being evicted from their old location, Ugallu helps out with the reopening. However after Yuko realizes they had forgotten the barrier at the old store, the group decide to guard the cafe for the next few days in case a Magical Girl had picked up the signal of Shirosawa or Lico in the time they were unprotected. Ugallu was standing watch outside with Mikan when Honyu Shu arrives for Lico, and after a fight breaks out Mikan instructs Ugallu to stay outside and confine anyone who tries to leave (which happened to be an unfortunate Sion Ogura calling her for backup). As she was still outside, Ugallu was unaffected by Sion's anti-magic elixir and remained conscious along with Yuko and Sion.
When Yuko dives into Honyu's dream in order to convince her not to fight, she finds it protected by a horde of Ziqiel's clones. Yuko calls Sion for help, who then sends in Ugallu to save her. Ugallu explains that as her true form isn't a soul but instead something like a mist, she can move freely within a person's dreams, and that she is used to being inside the heart of a Magical Girl anyway. Happy to have work (and an all-you-can-eat sashimi buffet), she fights off the Ziqiels while Yuko goes on ahead into Honyu's heart. Ugallu stood by while Yuko spoke to the now lucid Honyu, and afterwards complimented Yuko's "brainwashing" to the girl in question's dissatisfaction. Now awake, Yuko tries to dive into Lico's dream next to calm her, but is quickly forced out by the enraged fox. As the trio try to figure out what to do, Ugallu comes to the realization that Lico would probably listen to Shirosawa, and points out that while Mizuchi was sealed he could still talk through the mirror enshrined for him. This gives Sion an idea of how to open a hole in Shirosawa's seal to allow him to speak by creating a shrine to him, and Ugallu assists in the following ritual.
While Yuko and Sion finish enshrining a miniature vessel for Shirosawa, Ugallu is sent out to buy Yuko a new, sturdier phone that she believes will work better in the stormy conditions of Lico's dream. She returns as they finish, and celebrates the completion of her first job. Once their conflict is resolved, Honyu and Lico make up and the former agrees to give her blood to help unseal Shirosawa. While her blood weakens the seal it alone wasn't enough to break it, so Sion reveals her plan to send Ugallu, who is technically inanimate, into the sealed space as an offering to break Shirosawa out. Gladly accepting the job that only she can do, she enters the seal and successfully frees Shirosawa. With the situation resolved, Ziqiel leaves and Ugallu comments on his many copies, wishing he could have stayed in Banda Terrace because of "how yummy they were".
The extra in Chapter 64.5 sees Ugallu sent out on an errand to buy chicken thighs and mustard spinach, but along the way she gets the order mixed up and ends up buying peaches, rice, tuna, and croquettes.
Volume 6[]
When Sion is pulled into the world within the Yoshida family's barrier, Ugallu joins Yuko, Momo, Mikan, and later Lilith in rescuing her. While Yuko and Momo head inside after her, Mikan and Ugallu remain outside to support them. Ugallu is sent on an errand to pick up the needed supplies of a brush, calligraphy paper, and ink, but she mixes up her words and instead brings back croquettes, a flute, bread with a filling, and a gun. Yuko and Momo head into the other dimension and encounter who they believe to be Sion, but Mikan and Ugallu listening in from the real world realize that the entity they're talking to (later revealed to be Gusion) is not Sion. While Yuko and Momo continue to work with the fake Sion, Mikan and Ugallu call upon Lilith to help try to warn them. When Momo suggests they call Mikan with Yuko's phone, they both soon realize they don't know Mikan's number to her anger, though Ugallu had the number memorized and recites it. When the barrier's dimension starts to collapse, the group on Mikan's side aid Yuko, Momo, and the real Sion in escaping, resolving the incident. The morning after, Mikan took Ugallu to daycare with her passenger bike.
That night, Mikan laments to Ugallu about how she noticed Momo was feeling down but couldn't bring herself intervene, remembering the time when she could invoke her curse to drench Momo and spark a conversation. This prompts Ugallu to bring out a carton of mandarin juice, reassuring Mikan that she's always been the one to help her with that, and even after her birth that if they can't drench her with mana like in the past they can just do it with juice and talk afterwards, explaining that as "mamas are a hassle by nature" she should act as Momo's mother (to Mikan's displeasure). The two of them find Momo on the streets outside and douse her with the juice as Mikan spills her heart. After a brief gathering there of almost everyone but Yuko, Momo asks them all to come to her home afterwards as she wished to tell everyone about her past. Ugallu and the others head to Momo's room, and are soon joined by Yuko. With everyone gathered, Momo invites Yuko into her dreams to experience her memories while Lilith streams the scene to the rest of the group. Though Yuko takes longer to awaken due to being pulled into Metako's dream afterwards, Ugallu stays in Momo's room until she does.
In the extra Chapter 68.5 there is a scenario of Ugallu getting into trouble, such as getting stuck in a pipe while saving a cat or getting lost at the clothes store, all while the others order Mikan around as "Mikan mama" much to her displeasure. While Mikan is upset, Ugallu tells Mikan that she feels easy beside her and says that Mikan really may be her mother, which Mikan accepts, telling Ugallu she can call her "Mama" every so often.
In the extra Chapter 74.5, Lilith gathers the whole cast in a dream to battle it out and decide who's the strongest among them. Ryoko tries to bribe Lico into making Mikan hallucinate so she'll fight with Momo, taking out the strongest foes first. However, Ugallu overhears their plans and attacks in order to protect Mikan.
Volume 7[]

The new form Ugallu took in Chapter 81
When Banda Terrace is struck by a hurricane, Ugallu, along with Yuko, Momo, Lilith, and Mikan, stays beyond to protect it while the rest of its residents evacuate to the Chiyoda Home. While on the building's roof Yuko and Momo discover a hidden hatch containing old records of the Dark Office, and once the storm passes the group begins analyzing them. While the others struggle to decipher the strange language of the texts, Ugallu recognizes it as the commands used to move magical familiars, recalling similar orders from her own creation. She attempts to read a page and finds mention of a hidden door, but the text is too complex and almost overwrites her, much to everyone's dismay. Determined to succeed despite the other's protests, Ugallu tries once more to decipher the page and manages to read out an address, but in the process her "existence glitches" and she transforms into a large beast-like creature. She soon reverts back to normal, however the ordeal left her tired so she stays behind to rest while Yuko and Momo head to the location she uncovered, which happened to be Momo's house.
Abilities[]
Claws[]
Ugallu possesses razor-sharp claws that can slash through even metal with ease.
Familiar[]
As a familiar Ugallu is technically inanimate, allowing her to enter dreams and sealed spaces as an offering.
Curse[]
Ugallu was the source of Mikan's curse, which caused misfortune for those around her whenever she felt strong emotions. However, this ability may have required the use of Mikan's mana, and as Ugallu has not yet demonstrated it since her resummoning it is possible that she no longer possesses it.
Trivia[]
- Ugallu is named after a demon from Mesopotamian mythology.
- She is not the real being of myth however, but rather a familiar based on it.
- Ugallu's exact age is unknown, but based on the chronology of events surrounding her original creation, her age can be approximated to somewhere between 9 and 12 years old. However, if considering her resummoning in Chapter 52 as her official birth, she would be about half a year old at the present time.
